THE END Its finally the end of SAC!!! On Wednesday, Ms Kwok bought us McDonalds:D we changed the choreography for the Wayang Kulits and finished the last bits of filming. Instead, Zhiyi, Keren, Maybelle, and Lesley were the Da Lungs while the VA students took a break from it. The choreography became a lot better and Joshua edited the music so it was faster and everything was great! The only thing left is for Megan and Joshua to finish editing the video. Yay! |

ACM Session 6 Not much to post here because what we did was the same as the week before. But anyways.... last week we went to the Peranakan Museum again. We did more filming, and improved the Wayang Kulit choreography for the song. Lyn brought more lights so it was easier to film in the dark, and we also managed to run through the whole thing and I think it was not bad and that we're almost ready. Next week is the last lesson. I hope we can finished doing everything:P We're leaving early from school and ms Kwok is buying lunch for us:D |

ACM Session 5 We went to the Paranakan Museum on Wednesday. We were supposed to start filming and confirm all the stuff. So anyways, we set up a temporary screen and practised the whole Wayang Kulit video. It was working quite well. The light stuff that Lyn brought were really nice and the Wayang Kulit figures were really well done too, although some of them didn't have heads, but still. Megan borrowed a really professional video camera for filming from the school and I found out that I was going to be the teacher in the video. I think being the teacher is quite hard, because I have to act very non-smileyish. Which for me i think is kind of hard. But I hope I can do it properly... We had a dry run a couple of times and we had a short reflection time after the session. We shared our thoughts on our progress and suggested some improvements and ideas that could be considered being added in into the video. I feel that the progress is quite okay. It could be better, faster, but I think it’s an okay pace and that we'll be able to finish it and do a good job. |

gamelan music? This is an extra post. Normally i would post once every week, but Ms Kwok asked me to do this post about the Gamelan performance during the Arts Education Forum. So,during the Arts Education Forum, AEF,a few schools came to sota. One of them being Macpherson primary school. The students were around primary 3 or 4. But back to the main point,it was the first time i heard Gamelan music. I thought it would sound really old and weird, but it was actually not that bad. It was really cool that those primary school kids could play the Gamelan music, because they were quite good at it and they seemed so interested in this area at such a young age. Most of the instuments they used were ....unique?I'm not sure how to describe it but there was this teacher who told me that we were very lucky to watch the performance because normally we wouldn't get to see the instruments they used as they were usually not brought out. So i think that it makes the instruments unique since they were not very common. I don't have much to say,but i think i kinda like Gamelan music, its quite interesting and the students played it really nicely:) |

CONFIRMED STORYLINE Scenario: A lesson conducted during a field trip to the ACM. Students make their way to the entrance of the ACM to begin the class. Teacher/tour guide: You are about to watch a Wayang Kulit performance. It is a shadow puppet play that is widely performed in South East Asian countries such as Indonesia. Students: Appear disinterested, cut to Marcus face. Puppeteers (Hui Min, Guan Quan, Phoebe, Amanda) manipulates the wayang kulit props to traditional Gamelan music. Cut to Joshua and Keren texting on iphones Keren text: I don't get it Joshua text: Same here Cut to Zhi Yi who nudges Keren and Joshua to stop texting Zoom into Zhi Yi who looks intriged by the Wayang Kulit performance. (Music changes from traditional gamelan music to catchy contemporary music) Camera toggles quickly between wayang kulit screen and Zhi Yi's face. Disinterested students notice that Zhi Yi is keen on the performance and follows the example. Traditional warm light flickers to neon. Wayang Kulit dances to correspond to catchy contemporary music. (Lyrics to appers as subtitles) Verse 1: There was a time Long long ago Before there was TV The hype was so low The only entertainment Was shadow puppets Known as Wayang Kulit Chorus: So do not sigh And take a seat And enjoy the uniqueness to Wayang Kulit With a stick in hand And a dalang holding it. Verse 2: They told many stories Across the centuries It was also considered A masterpiece Gamelan music Was played with it It is worth watching So please take a seat. Chorus: So do not sigh And take a seat And enjoy the uniqueness to Wayang Kulit With a stick in hand And a dalang holding it. Bridge: Seemingly plain With its black and white looks /appearance But look at it in a different light And you'll see How colourful it can really be. Hands of puppeters crash through with wayang kulit puppets and continue dancing Cut to suprised look of class Cut back to wayang kulit performance Chorus: So do not sigh And take a seat And enjoy the uniqueness to Wayang Kulit With a stick in hand And a dalang holding it. (Song ends with a bang) Class cheers wildly. Cut to class leaving ACM still talking excitedly about Wayang Kulit Cut to someone's iphone left behind Messages appears: "Get it now?"

Lesley's Reflection of Wayang Kulit Reading - Arts of Southeast Asia Kerlogue, Fiona. Arts of Southeast Asia. Singapore: Thames and Hudson, 2004. This article tells us about the assimilation of traditions (mainly the Javanese and Balinese) in Asia. It all started when the Hindu Court of Majapahit was forced to abandon Java in the sixteenth century. The royal family and many members of the aristocracy took refuge in Bali, taking much of their artistic traditions with them. It was not log before the presence of Javanese traditions, religion in particular, became evident in Bali. Images carved on the walls of religious areas and structures of temples were soon reconstructed to resemble designs from Javanese architecture of the period. The spread of the Javanese narrative tradition soon followed. Although Bali already had its own legends, they started to spread even more during this period of assimilation. My Thoughts: I think it is amazing how rich Balinese culture is. It isn’t just one culture by itself. Instead, it is a mixture of many others, each with their own roots tracing back to the beginning of time. Learning about Indonesian Wayang Kulit is a part of this project. Let’s not stop at the surface. We should also look beyond and find out more about the traditions that lie behind it. I am sure that doing this will allow us to gain a better understanding of Indonesian Wayang Kulit.
